A Year Without A Microwave: The Beginning

For years, I have loathed microwaves. Loathed them. They are weird contraptions that make my food taste funny and are utterly not needed. But of course I have one because practically no rentable structure these days is equipped sans microwave. So 2+ years out of college I find myself using a microwave all the time just because it is there. In the morning I make my oatmeal in the microwave, in the afternoon I heat up last night's leftovers for lunch, and on lazy days, I pop in a microwaveable meal for dinner. Why? To save time. In real life I don't have the ability to spend hours making food for every meal and so to just microwave something is super easy and saves me so much time.

Or does it? Is the crappy taste really worth my time? Can I function with that "lost" time? We will see. Today begins my year without a microwave.

DAY 1:
Breakfast: homemade granola (made in the oven) with vanilla soy milk, banana, and brewed coffee (with more soy milk).

Lunch:
For Christmas, my sister gave me the Clean Slate cookbook by the editors of Martha Stewart Living. I decided to try it out last night and made a red lentil soup, which I reheated on the stove.

Dinner
For dinner, I also attempted another recipe from the Clean Slate cookbook - the brussels sprouts and avocado salad (amazing!) with some Israeli couscous. Divine. All stove top made!

Time spent cooking + cleaning up today:
Breakfast: 10 mins
Lunch: 10 mins
Dinner: 45 mins cooking + 20 mins cleanup
Total:1 hour, 35 mins

Day 1 no microwave complete. 364 to go.

P. S. I really love the oven. Like really love ovens. Perhaps this should be an ode to the oven instead?
