A Year Without A Microwave: It's been a while...

Hello - it's been a while!

There are a couple reasons for my absence. First, I was home for the summer, so I wasn't in charge of cooking most of my own food, and some of it was microwaved. Second, I got home at the same time as most of my family and they all microwaved their food... so I felt extremely weird standing by the oven, waiting for it to heat up while they were all chowing down.

However, I did indeed on many an occasion not eat a certain item offered simply because it was microwaved. This, of course, depended on who was making it - if it was my sister, she was supportive of my no-microwave lifestyle, but my parent, on the other hand, would have been highly offended (so I enthusiastically accepted their microwaved food). And on my turn to cook, you know I cooked sans microwave :).

What was microwaved food like after months of not having it? Just as terrible as I had remembered it. If not worse. The food was overcooked, tough, and transitioned temperatures way too quickly (burn my tongue off one second, lukewarm the next). It just reaffirmed my love for the oven and taking those extra ten or so minutes to heat my food in the oven.

Now, I'm back at school and back at the no microwave game. The ONLY thing I find myself using the microwave for recently is popcorn. I love popcorn as an afternoon snack - I heat it in a specific microwave popcorn bowl with olive oil and salt and it is JUST delicious. So I am currently looking for a stove-top option. I found this one at Crate & Barrel the other day and am considering buying it soon!

So onto microwave-free meals for this week:

As you all know, I pretty much cook one really big meal on Sunday and then eat it for the rest of the week. Yes, I do get bored, but the convenience is 100% worth it.

Day 1: Stovetop Preparation
I used the "10 Dollar Dinners" cookbook by Melissa D'Arabian

All timed correctly, the entire meal took about 45 minutes to put together.

Finished product!

Day 2: Leftovers
I swapped in a salad that I didn't have a chance to eat for
lunch instead of my planned broccoli.

Dessert
Ben & Jerry's. Seriously though if you haven't tried this flavor, you need to purchase it immediately. I had to restrain myself from eating the entire carton...
